The Joy of Fall Colors

We’re a little late with our newsletter this month, but to be fair Fall was also late to start. Beautiful days and cool nights make for gorgeous paddling and colors on the river!

Paint & Sip: Painting the Palisades

Tracy Broome organized a Paint & Sip fundraiser with artist Esther Simphat on Sunday October 19th. It was a gorgeous day and more than a dozen members came out to paint the Palisades and raise money for the club. We’ve got talent!

Travel Report: James & James’ Big Adventure

In late August, members James Sexton and James Mumm took their kayaks (and families, but they’re not important here 🤣) for some R&R in Wellfleet on Cape Cod. Included in the getaway were two memorable trips on the Salt Pond in nearby Eastham (the Salt Pond leads to the Nauset Marsh and the Atlantic Ocean, with put-ins near the Cape Cod National Seashore Visitor Center). The trips reinforced the lesson that all of us who paddle on the Hudson have learned – just because you paddle in the same place time after time doesn’t mean that the experiences of different days will be the same.

The Jameses planned their trips to hump over high tide, starting before and ending after. At low tide, kayaks often run aground and the exiting water provides a little push to vacationing kayakers. If it’s timed right, the incoming tide will do the same. The first time out was gorgeous and clear (if a bit windy), and allowed the members to traverse the marsh and paddle through an oyster farm. This might have been slightly more interesting for the fish-eating James. Vegan James seemed strangely less interested. Happily, the midpoint of the paddle also included a rendezvous with a group of seals (who would have probably enjoyed a meal of oysters).

The second outing began with windy but fair conditions, though as the Jameses got closer to the break that opens the marsh to the ocean, a gigantic rain cloud (top left photo) closed in. Counting thunder and lighting flashes made for fast paddling (middle photo) before the rain began. It was another great day on the water (the payoff after the storm passed was a double rainbow) and a pleasant reminder that no two paddles, even in the same place, are ever the same.
