FALL INTO BEAUTY
Members are enjoying fall at the club as the leaves begin to change and darkness falls earlier each day. Every season has its beauty, and members were inspired to capture it all.
Thank you to members Jeff Rappaport and Jason McGinnis for their photos.
NO, THE HOUSE ISN’T HAUNTED…
Or is it?
Member Jason McGinnis risked life and limb to snap a pic of a longtime member (an original PBC Skeleton Crew member from our founding era) after a long day of carrying gravel. Then despite the danger, he also captured a rare pic of the ghost of put-the-chain-back-up-after-you-leave-and-turn-out-all-the-lights-and-make-sure-the-heat-is-off. This ghost has been known to haunt those who dare to cross it.
PAINT & SIP ON OCTOBER 24TH
A great time was had at the Paint & Sip fundraiser with artist Esther Stimphant. Chris Grieco made a fantastic spread for the brunch, and Anna Mundt and Mitch Borrero helped Tracy Broome make the day a wonderful success (she also took amazing photos!).

HUDSON RIVER ECOLOGY NEWS
The fall run is on. October brings bass, bluefish, and bait through the Tappan Zee reach — our best fishing of the season. One flag on the horizon: DEC's juvenile striped bass survey is wrapping up, and the 2025 index was below average for the third straight year. A new Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) working group is studying management options, with the next stock assessment due in 2027.
Sturgeon: report sightings. DEC is investigating an unusual mortality event after dead Atlantic sturgeon turned up this year. Haverstraw Bay and the deep channel near the bridges are core sturgeon habitat. If you see a dead or distressed sturgeon, note the location and report it to DEC — every report helps.
Watch the water. Drought pushed the salt front north to Poughkeepsie last fall — farther than usual. We're always brackish here, but saltier water shifts the ecosystem fish depend on. Also on alert: blue-green algae. Last September's eight-mile bloom (north of us) was the largest seen in 40 years of monitoring. See a green paint-like slick? Don't touch it; report it to DEC.
Eating your catch? The PCB advisory stands: women and children should never eat Hudson fish, and everyone else should limit consumption, especially larger fish.
Wildlife watch. Osprey are staging for their southbound trip this month. Coves will fill with migrating waterfowl, and bunker schools moving downriver draw the bass and blues behind them.
REPORT IT
Anything suspicious on the water (fish kills, pollution, distressed wildlife): DEC's 24/7 dispatch line — 1-844-DEC-ECOS (1-844-332-3267)
Suspicious algal bloom: online form at on.ny.gov/hab, email HABsInfo@dec.ny.gov, or call 518-402-8179
HAB exposure symptoms (people or pets): Poison Control — 1-800-222-1222
WORK PARTY REPORTS
Progress was made on two ongoing work projects. First, many buckets of sand and gravel were carried down to the club so that we can mix cement for ramp extensions, the French drain on the south side of the house, and for the area in front of the doors which is now complete.
Second, we are repairing the deck. The beams are in good shape, although a few short sections need to be replaced. The next step is to fill the nail holes with roofing cement and cover all the beams with a membrane before installing the new boards. Many thanks to the work party crew: Chris Thomas, Chris Grieco, Randy Gunnell, Ed Haller, James Sexton, Tony DeSpirito, Ryan Pogy, Rob Bos, and Roel Kunst (thank you to Roel for the pics).
CLUB DO'S & DONT’S
Member Jason McGinnis reminds club members to please turn switch off when you leave the club. The heat will turn off, with timer, and then turn back on later unless you fully turn the switch to off. Thank you for helping us save energy!
